Zahrah sighed down at the bubbling cauldron in front of her, frustration slumping her shoulders. She’d known brewing a batch of Wolfsbane would be quite a challenge when she’d agreed to it, but apparently she hadn’t known exactly how impossible it would feel.

She sat back, pushing damp hair out of her face and rubbing her reddened eyes, probably a side effect of the aconite fumes. For a brief moment, Z let herself fantasize of being the type of person to admit defeat, as it would certainly make her life easier right then – it was such an affront to her stubborn streak, though, that she quickly shook her head and once again threw out her sad, failed attempt so she could start anew.

The sound of the front door of the shop opening alerted her before she could, and, peeling off the plastic gloves she used to handle the toxic ingredients, Zahrah poked her head out of the back room to greet the customer. ”Hello – “

There was much too much going on in Tristan's mind. Way too much. And he needed Zahrah. He'd just left St. Mungos, with explicit instructions from some of his friends there to take a breather. He couldn't heal others, not the way he was feeling, not how he was so worried about his sister, and he didn't have a prayer in calming down about that until he spoke to someone he could and has trusted with his life and his little sister's to boot.

He rushed into the shop he knew Zahrah worked in, his hands shaking, his eyes wet, cheeks painted in red blotches from how he'd been crying. He couldn't handle it. It was almost like he was thirteen all over again and his sister was in the Hospital Wing at age eleven, all because the kids didn't like him.

"Z..." Tristan forced out, tears falling again down his pale face and blotchy cheeks as soon as he saw her face poke out from the back room. "Ryanne... She..." he didn't know if he could say it, he knew he needed to, but if he said it out loud, then maybe it would come true and he knew better than to realize that he could live if his sister wasn't...

”Tristan?”

The beginning of a pleasantly surprised smile on Zahrah’s face was quickly replaced by a frown, her stomach immediately in knots at the sight of Tristan’s face. He’d been crying – he was crying now too, looking alone as he stood, trembling, at the entrance of her shop, and she thought she should help, but – as always in such a situation, her first instinct was to freeze in place, wide-eyed and uncomfortable and thinking, Oh god, I’m not good at this.

She really wasn’t. Zahrah stopped halfway to him, uncertain. ”Er. I’ll go, ah, put the kettle on, alright? Don’t… go anywhere.” A step closer to him, an awkward pat on his shoulder, and she disappeared back into the makeshift kitchen-slash-work-area to hurriedly prepare two cups of tea. It was a miracle she didn’t slosh any of it onto her clothes in her rush to get back to Tristan, suddenly feeling like she was being a bad friend by leaving him there like that.

But then, looking at him again, Zahrah was once more taken with nervousness; hands occupied with the steaming mugs, she jerked her chin at the shop’s back door, open to reveal the garden outside, both to stall for time while she figured out what to say and how to help and because she figured being outside would make anyone feel at least a little less melancholy. ”So…” She placed the tea on one of the little tables she’d recently set outside, so customers could enjoy homemade lemonade in the shaded garden, and sat down. A second chair was pulled over for Tristan. Zahrah finally met his eyes, chewing on her lower lip. ”What’s going on?”

It looked, to Tristan, that Z had wanted to smile, but seeing the look on his face, she'd replaced it with a frown. That was a thing he felt badly for, but he didn't know what to do. He was scared and upset and angry and he had so many feelings that he wasn't sure he could sort through on his own.

He needed help. He knew that much. And he'd gone to Z before anyone else because despite the fact that he knew that she thought she wasn't good at helping others, she was. She had a level head, something he didn't have back at school, something he'd worked so hard to get as he grew up, something he surely didn't have in that moment.

And he needed it.

Zahrah said she was going to put the kettle on, and he knew that meant that she was uncomfortable with what was going on, and though he felt horrible about it, he couldn't truly go to anyone else for help in this, not in this case.

Not really.

She walked to the back room again, after patting his shoulder and telling him not to go anywhere. And it wasn't as if he could have even tried to go anywhere, his feet felt stuck to the floor of her shop, his legs locked, frozen in place. She disappeared away from him, and he watched after her, staring at the doorway she'd disappeared into and sighed, eyes still glued to it till she came back out from it again.

She looked like she was nervous, as she moved her chin towards the garden outside and he nodded, knowing that she'd meant that he should follow her outside. He just hoped that he wasn't getting in the way, or that him showing up there wasn't going to get her into any trouble.

He followed her outside and watched as she set the tea on one of the little tables and sat down. He slowly sat down too in the chair closest to her and their eyes met once again. He saw that she was chewing on her lower lip and he looked down at his lap a moment before his forcing out, in his shaking and sad voice, "Ryanne... Mungos... May be... May be dying..." He hadn't said everything, in fact, he'd barely said anything, but those few words hurt him so badly that he wasn't even sure he could even say more just yet, even though he knew that really he had to. Someone had to know, someone he trusted.

He needed her to know. He couldn't be alone in this. It hurt too much.

The weather in the garden was mild, a bubble of enchantment that’d cost Zahrah dearly to commission but was necessary for her precious plants to survive winter in Britain, and still she found herself shivering slightly. It was the anticipation, watching Tristan struggle to find his words, while her thoughts went in the worst possible directions; she had a bad feeling about this, an horrible sort of premonition, as if she knew -

”….Merlin.” She didn’t even realize she said it out loud at first, and when she did, a hand went up to cover her mouth. Zahrah dropped it just as quickly, fingers knotting in her lap. She considered reaching for her tea. Thought better of it, not trusting her hands to be steady. ”What do you mean? What… what happened?” An echo of that day, exactly as she’d feared. Zahrah had felt angry, then, driven by righteous anger, but now she only felt – blank. Useless. She didn’t know what she was meant to tell him, how to best comfort her friend. She could storm an infirmary for him, terrorize staff for him, anything that involved doing, but she didn’t know what to say.

”Tristan, how can I help?”

The weather was mild as they went outside. But Tristan wasn't sure if that was because of the enchantment bubble or because the weather was mild. Tristan couldn't find his words right off the bat, but finally they escaped his lips.

He told her that his baby sister, Ryanne was at Mungos and that she could be dying.

And just hearing him say those words out loud was enough to make him feel as if his heart was breaking into millions of tiny pieces inside of his chest.

Her single word, Merlin and her quick movement of her hand going up to cover her mouth before moving her hand to her lap with her fingers knotting together made him nod his head with no sounds to follow. She asked him what he meant, asked him what happened and all he could do was shrug his shoulders and put his head in his hands because he, himself, had no idea. Not really. Only that she'd been attacked.

"A... A... at... attack..." he finally forced out, his head still in his hands, until she spoke up, asking how she could help. He looked up at her and shrugged his shoulders, whispering, "I... I dunno..." he answered her, reaching for her, he needed to be held, that he knew well enough.

Zahrah found herself dragging her chair closer to Tristan’s, thinking physical proximity would provide better comfort but stopping short of actually touching him. As someone who usually preferred to keep her distance when she was upset, she wasn’t sure if her hand on his arm would be welcome. ”Ryanne has been attacked?” she repeated dumbly. ”But – do they know who’s done it? What did – what did they do?”

It probably wasn’t her place to ask these questions, wasn’t what Tristan had come to see her for. He was reaching for her, and so it seemed he would be okay with being touched after all, and, relieved that she was essentially being told what to do, Zahrah wrapped him up in a hug. This she could manage, if it was what Tristan needed. Into his shoulder she mumbled, ”I’m so sorry.” It didn’t seem fair, that it should happen to anyone again and again, this maddening worry and uncertainty. And this time had to be worse, Zahrah thought, to be a Healer himself and still have it be just short of enough. Her eyes were prickling strangely when she pulled back.

For lack of any better consolation, she nudged his mug of tea in Tristan’s direction. ”You should drink up. It’s this new relaxing brew I’ve been experimenting with. It’s, er, some honeywater, and hellebore… sorry. You don’t care about that,” Zahrah muttered to herself, shaking her head. Her brows furrowed in confusion, frustration. ”There has to be something we could do, together. I could – I don’t know, brew something, see if my mother has ingredients that St. Mungo’s Healers don’t have access to…?”

Tristan trembled as Zahrah moved her chair closer to his. He knew she preferred to keep distance, but that wasn't what he needed. Not in that moment. Right then he needed someone to hold him, to tell him that he was going to be okay.

She repeated his words and all he could do was nod his head and shrug his shoulders. Maybe he could guess who it had been, but he truly didn't know for sure. "I... I... I don't... I don't know..." he forced out, his voice soft, almost haunted. And he reached for her. He needed to be touched, held. He needed to be told everything was going to be okay. When Zahrah reached out for him, he nearly collapsed into her. He was scared, terrified and he felt more alone than ever before.

She mumbled into his shoulder that she was sorry, and he nodded his head. He was sorry too, because if it was who he thought it was, everything was all his fault, just for him being him.

She nudged his tea towards him and told him to drink up, that it was a new relaxing brew, and though she spoke more of the brew, he didn't hear her words, despite wanting to so badly. His mind was just not there.

"I... I... I don't know..." he said softly, tears falling from the corners of his eyes now. "I... I'm s... scared..." he whispered to her, tears falling silently down his cheeks.

Tristan felt so fragile in Zahrah’s arms that it terrified her. She tightened her hold on him almost unconsciously before she let go, wondering desperately if it would do any good in holding him together, keeping him in one piece when he seemed so close to falling apart altogether. It pained her to think that she might not be enough to hold him up, and once again Zahrah wished she could be more, stronger – if only here, only now, only until Tristan was better. Because he had to be.

She was not the same person she’d been when she’d met Tristan for the first time, had no desire to be, but perhaps she could draw on that girl’s attitude again. It had helped back then, hadn’t it? ”I know. I know, but listen, Ryanne is going to be okay, alright? There’s no other option.” Zahrah’s tone was firm, though there was gentleness in the way she folded a napkin into Tristan’s hand to dry his eyes. She sounded surer than she felt. Not because she didn’t believe what she was saying – she did – but because this still felt wildly out of her league, on a mission for a better friend to handle, a better human. ”I know that because I know you’re going to do everything you can for her. And I’ll help. You’re not going to be alone in this.”

Tristan felt so fragile, so breakable, and he didn't know how to fix himself. Or even, if he COULD fix himself.

Or Ryanne.

And it hurt, and scared him worse than anything ever had before in his entire life. Not even the promise from his parents that he would be hurt badly if he kept going in the way he had been, as he tried so hard to help others instead of hurting or killing them as his parents had wanted him to do, scared him as much as this had.

If he couldn't fix his sister, then he wasn't sure he knew if HE could survive this. He loved her too much to lose her, and he worried that he would lose himself if she didn't make it...

Zahrah held tightly to him, something that if he felt like he could speak, he would have thanked her profusely for. However, at this point, speech just didn't seem as if it would come.

Not in this second. Though he wanted to thank her...

He was falling apart, from the inside out, and he wasn't sure how to deal with it. He wished he knew, but he didn't. What he did know though was that he needed Zahrah...

And, as usual, she was there for him.

Just as he knew she would be.

She told him that Ryanne would be okay, that there wasn't any other option. He hoped that Z was right, but it still scared him and worried him regardless. She folded a napkin into his hand and he took it, squeezing it tightly in his hands as he looked up at her. She sounded sure of what she was saying, and he wanted so badly to believe her, that his sister would be okay in the end.

He needed her to be okay...

More than anything in the whole world...

"I... I... I... I'm... t... trying... to..." he whispered, forcing his shaky voice to speak, despite how he was feeling. "Wh... what are... what are we... going to... do?"
